Mayor's Vision Roadshows 23 – 24 June – everyone welcome

21st June 2010

Torbay Development Agency and Torbay Council are holding a series of roadshows this week where everyone is invited to come along and find out what progress has been made and what is planned for the future.  The Mayor’s Vision was launched in 2008 to deliver the physical and economic regeneration of one of Europe’s finest marine environments - the New English Riviera, and share the benefits with the local community.

Anyone involved in Torbay is welcome to just turn up to any one of these open public events at any of the following times:

3pm or 6pm on Wednesday 23 June, at the Redcliffe Hotel,Paignton

3pm or 6pm on Thursday 24 June, at the Imperial Hotel, Torquay.

Each session will last approximately 2 hours. There is no need to pre-register, and each event is identical so people need only attend one session to find out all of the information. We are looking forward to meeting the residents and businesses of Torbay to provide information and seek their ongoing views.

The Mayor of Torbay, Nick Bye, will be attending the session at 3pm on Wednesday in Paignton.

The Mayor said:  “The Mayor’s Vision aims to deliver the regeneration of our beautiful Bay, one of the finest natural marine environments in Europe. Making sure that the local community benefits from these plans is crucial to the vision, both in terms of quality of life and economic prosperity.

“Since we launched the Vision two years ago, we have listened and taken advice from all sections of the business community and residents; we have addressed your concerns and are working towards robust strategies for building heights, transport, parking and heritage. We are now ready to take a major step forward and wish to share our progress with the people of Torbay. We invite comment and I urge anyone with an interest in Torbay to come along to one of these events next week.”

Some of the key areas of progress in the Mayor’s Vision are:

  • We are nearing the completion of Paignton Library which will open in the autumn.

  • Construction has started on site at the Castle Circus Regeneration Project. This will ultimately help meet the increasing demand for modern office space for private sector investors in the Bay; improve the public realm and help local shops attract new tenants.  It will help create a new vibrancy to the area and transform the existing Assembly Room into a dynamic Community Hub for a diverse range of uses.

  • Major progress has been made on articulating planning outcomes for the town centres and several private sector schemes identified within the briefs are progressing well: Torwood Street development and Victoria Parade, both of which are integral to the success of Torquay as a business and leisure location.

  • We are currently advertising for developers to come forward to set up a major regeneration vehicle to deliver some of the most important projects which will lead to the economic renewal of the town centres, Paignton especially.  We've had a great response.

Chief Executive of the Torbay Development Agency, Steve Parrock said: “The Mayoral Vision, launched in 2008, sought to address a number of significant issues, in particular to promote Torbay to investors from outside of the area as a desirable place to live, work and do business in.

"It also sought to generate local investment from renewed confidence in the area and provide much needed modern hotels to improve the tourism offer and office space to prevent local firms moving outside of Torbay to neighbouring towns.  It has mostly succeeded to date but it will take more time and resources to reach the tipping point where further invention from the council is no longer required.”

There is no need to pre-register for these public roadshows, and the content of every event is identical so you only need to attend once.
