The historic port of Brixham is benefiting from a major regeneration project aiming to enhance the local economy, which remains heavily based on the fishing industry. Unlike many other UK ports the Brixham fishery is largely sustainable and therefore has thrived in recent years resulting in the highest value catch in England and a world class reputation for quality. Brixham fish finds its way to local eateries, top London restaurants and the plates of consumers across Europe. The fishing industry is complemented by a number of supporting industries and also the world standard Astra Zeneca Environmental Laboratory. The town's thriving community has a strong tourism sector, thriving art community and a fascinating maritime heritage. The Brixham regeneration programme aims to support and develop these strengths and encourage a long term sustainable future for this bustling port.

The Fishmarket development runs from 2007 to 2010 and is being implemented in partnership with Brixham 21, the town's community regeneration partnership.
Latest News
The main steel frame and external cladding for the Phase 2A of the new fish market building is complete as is the mechanical and electrical works. This part of the new fish market is now being used. This has allowed the planned works to the old fish market to commence. The tenant for the first floor offices has moved in.
The front end of the existing fish market building has been handed over to the contractor. It has completed asbestos removal activities and has commenced demolition works.
The removal of the canopy to the existing fish market building is nearing completion.
The Phase 2 works are due for completion in August 2010.
